Analyze Data

Excel's biggest usage may be in the analysis of data.

Data usually starts and a big dataset with many rows and columns.

Columns are the different fields that are part of the data.

Rows are individual items.

This is typically know as details and can be millions of rows of data.

This data can be analyzed by:
  • Summarizing details via a Pivot Table
  • Checked against another source (ex. previous day) for changes
  • Charting to see trends though typically across some date period (day, week, month, quarter, year, etc.)
  • Extracting a subset of data
  • Looking for differences
  • Reconciling differences
  • Looking for patterns
  • Combining different sources together (ex. from 2 different systems)
  • Looking for spikes or changes in data (ex. data went up more than 10%)
  • Having data in multiple sheets and comparing it
  • compare two datasets in terms of record counts, sum of a field
  • Data quality analysis
  • New trade or items analysis
  • Timing changes (DoD, WoW, MoM, YoY, etc.)
