Ribbon

What is the Ribbon?

At the top of Excel is the the ribbon, shown above, which was called the Menu previously. It allows you to do actions on your spreadsheet.

For beginners the difficult part will be finding what you're looking for. A quick Google search will usually do the job.

Once you get use to the Ribbon you'll be able to find the action you need easily.

    Menus compared with Ribbon

The ribbon and the menu are pretty similar and do the same basic purpose. The main difference is that the Ribbon has more information.

    Where is it?

The ribbon can be hidden and you can press Ctrl+F1 to show it.

Why are parts of the Ribbon greyed out

This usually means those functions aren't available for various reasons:
  • Can't paste if nothing in the clipboard
  • A dialog is displayed
  • You're editing a cell

    Hiding the Ribbon
  • Ctrl+F1

    The mouse wheel

Hover over the ribbon and scroll the mouse wheel and the Ribbon will cycle through the different tabs
